Hi Kerem.

Greetings to you there. I hope these few lines find you happy and doing well.

I seen your ad in S+L #43 and decided to drop you a few lines. I am constantly reaching out through correspondence to make new friends all over the world. I write to people of all colors, races, young, old, male, female. all religion, I let no barrier stop me. I only want to know where their head and heart are. If they are somewhere near the same plain where I am then we can be friends. In your ad you said that you love to make new friends as well so do I. So Kerem if you want a new true friend and not a plastic friendship I would be very happy to correspond with you.

Let me tell you a little about my self. I am 5 foot 7 inchs tall, brown eyes + hair, 170 pounds, single, the father of one 12 year old son, a native of Florida, Some of my interests are reading, writing letters, I like to exercise, weight lifting (light) walking, Jogging, bicycling, canoeing, I like the beach, good friends, sunsets, nature, camping out and more.

Well Kerem I will close here for now I do hope to hear from you in the near future, but if you have enough correspondence already could you pass my name and address on to someone else there who would like a pen-friend here in the U.S. Thank you, have a nuce day, Take care, later

Perry A. (Wizard)

First letters are always awkward to write, but in order for there to be a second letter, there should be something that triggers the recipient to respond. Perry’s letter was written when I was in a small town near Providence, R.I, during a week off from my Grand Tour. My grandmother died when I was in Minneapolis. Lonely, sad, missing the British guy I hooked up with earlier that month, grieving her loss. I needed quiet time, away from the madding punk crowd and the remote house, filled with videos, old copies of MRR, cats, an old dog and my friend’s ex-girlfriend who was eying 18 y/o me was the best hideaway place.

I returned home to find this letter a couple of months later. There was nothing in it that drove me to write Perry back. His weight-lifting hobby? the 12 y/o son? He found my address in Slug and Lettuce, so how come he didn’t mention punk at all? I didn’t write him back and never forwarded his address to anyone.

Hello Keren,

Well it seems as if things are going pretty well for you. I play bass too, but recently have become discouraged. I kind of just want to sell my bass. I had the most miserable year and I’m really looking forward to going back home. My roomate had just moved out and stole some of my records in the process – really rare ones too. Now I’ll never get  them back. These recrods were not only expensive, but had sentimental value. It kills me that they are gone. It is like another crushing defeat. I work all the time as well, but all my $ (especially now since my roomate moved) goes to pay rent. So if you need a place to stay it’ll have to be in St. Louis (Mousouri – s?!) at 314-_______. Otherwise I’m really sick of MPLS, and find people not too nice here. I will finish school soon and call will be happiness.

god – Im miserable.

I’m sorry. I’ll try to write back when I’m in a better mood.

Carissa moved away from Minneapolis before I made it there. It took 11 more years for me to make it to St. Louis, but by then we were no longer in touch, of course. I didn’t even remember her when we drove from East St. Louis, IL to Real St. Louis, the one with the Arch and the Louis and Clark fame.

Sorry it’s taken me so long to get back to you. There’s no excuse, really, just my own apathy.

I’m Nick, the kid you met in Providence. I’ve been trying to go vegan so hard, but cheese is my Achilles Heel. I love quessedillas, cheese sticks and pizza. Mocha frappes are wonderful too… yum… Yeah, it’s a lame excuse.

My New Year’s sucked ass. My wretched shrew of a girlfriend broke up w/me the day after Xmas (silly Christian Holiday that most Americans celebrate). She took my virginity and ran away w/it. Evil person. She broke up w/me for no reason. Oh well, time to build a bridge and get over it.

“Give Me Back” is great for chilling out. I’m home from school today. It’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day. He was this bourgouiese, reformist black leader. It’s 1 PM here, I wonder what time it is there. I’m listening to Slayer – “Reign in Blood”. Goode shit.

I once went to a show w/ some shitty skate-punk band. I kept heckling them. Later a good band played a song  called “skater punks suck.” The skaters started whining, so I yelled “Go home and listen to some No Use for a Name!” He came up to me and said “what’s the matter? Is No Use too hardcore for you, you fucking faggot?” Then he called me a “kike” and a “nigger-lover” and kicked my ass. Fun. I hate skate-punk losers.

Nekhei Naatza can stay at my house a little while if you’d like – a night or two, maybe more. Maybe my band can play a show w/yours. We’re called WARDIALER. We sing about phreaking/ hacking, and other shit. I can book y’all a show.

I totally remembered you and I was quite pleased to hear from you. I thought you were hella-rad when we met. I used to think about you periodically. Even now, I think of what you are doing, thousands of miles away. Well, must be going. I have a lit of mail to catch up on.

PS: This might be a dumb question, but is there lots of anti-Semitism in Israel?

I remember meeting Nick. It was in Fast Forward, a record store in downtown Providence, RI that is no longer exists. He was a geek looking teenager, 3, maybe 4 years younger than me, and he wore a Man is the Bastard t-shirt. It’s weird, the things one remembers. I remember that he said that I should write him and so I did. I don’t remember whether he gave me his address or told me to look for it in MRR.

At the time he wrote a column for MRR. I don’t remember his columns but I do remember that they weren’t too popular. Googling Nick Fitt (w/various other keywords for the sake of long-tailing) Brings this post by Felix Havoc and a couple of other links – old message boards, broken geocities links etc. It’s the mid-90’s we’re talking about and he has probably neglected this nickname quite a while back.

Anyway, judging by this letter, it must have been his young age that got him that column, because a great talent or wisdom aren’t reflected here. I think that he responded me. I saw No Use for a Name in L.A and hated them, became vegan when I returned to Israel and started building a network for Nekhei Naatza’s upcoming U.S tour. However, by late January I have already quit the band and confirmed my English lover that I’d be moving in with him in March. Not sure whether I wrote him or not; so far I haven’t found more letters from him in the bags.

Nic Fit, however, is one of my favourite DC punk songs. Couldn’t find a proper recording on Youtube, so I’ll leave it to you to search.

you are not forgotten! I am sorry for my slow reply, of course I actually have a good excuse. I just returned from Mexico two weeks ago… my great friend Andria and I hitchhiked to San Diego, then took 2nd class trains all over the country. We avoided the tourist shit + white people. We saw alot of natural beauty, and also met tons of cool punks too! We saw two shows, but missed most of the bands. We most namely saw a cool band called SABOTAJE. We also went to an Anarchist library in Mexico city – very amazing! The whole trip was very cheap, I only spent around $300 (us) in 5 weeks total! And that was eating lots of yummy food! I traded many tapes for Mexico punks too! More stupid stuff about life: T.W.P has done alot of tours in late ’96, and I did alot of travelling too. So yes, life is good!

It’s cool that you enjoyed Portland. I’ve got alot of cool friends there – yes, DETESTATION and many others. Kelly + Saira are great people. L.A is total shit! In Mexico city many punks are like total poseur Sid Vicious shit. They all sniff glue. Of course the people we met were cool and did not sniff glue. Hey, you’ll tour U.S.A?! T.W.P will tour Canada (all) in July + August so we should play together! Or tell me your dates and I’ll find you people! Maybe I can travel with you people?! Please send those reviews to me! I actually do not want a copy of the ‘zine, only the reviews. The reason is because I have tons of ‘zines, and soon I’ll move so I try to get rid of stuff! I’ve said hello to people you met here, and they say hello to you! 🙂 Is the new N.N 10″ ready? Or the new tape? Soon the new T.W.P is ready. Also soon the M.P.A double LP. As of today, I actually have no new stuff out… but in some weeks I will. “Sabat” has a new place now in a youth centre. We will move in soon and re-open in March. I’ve sent to you some raw punk that I hope you’ll enjoy… I was originally only wanting to include the Canadian stuff on it, but I decided to put on some other countries too. Thanks for the cool photo of you + N.N. too! Say hello to Federico! The lazy bastard hasn’t replied! Okay, sorry but this is all for now! Reply when you can!

Love from Jason.

Return Stamps!

T.W.P – Third World Planet, Jason’s band.

M.P.A – Mexican Power Authority, Jason’s band too, still alive and kicking.

N.N – Nekhei Naatza. The guy who was going to release the 10″ bailed out on us and the material got released as an LP by Beer City Records (but I cannot find any information about the record on the website).

A wonderful example of punk pre-internet network. I stayed in Vancouver with Andy, one of my first pen-pals. While I was there Jason called from Victoria and when he heard about me he invited me to hang out with him for the weekend. At the time he was corresponding and trading with Federico, my friend, inspiration (and back then bandmate too). Jason also referred me to his friends Kelly and Saira with whom I stayed in Portland, also friends of Federico.

It was a weekend to remember, hanging out with the local anarchists, sneaking to the city’s fanciest hotel and eating leftovers from the room service while viewing the sea and the cityscape from the roof, hanging out in a Christmas ornament shop and getting the eye from the owner and seeing Black Kronstadt live in a basement show (I *THINK* my memory does not deceive me here… anyway, they have me their “7ep then). Also, I took my first ferry ride and loved it.

The tour did happen, only I had quit the band in the winter of 97 and moved to England to be with the guy I loved.

The zine reviews he mentioned? the reviews? I guess It was another of my attempts to pull together a personal fanzine, another one that didn’t happen.

My name is Andrew B, I’m 16, people think I’m a mix between punk, a hippie and satan. I’m into peace, heavily into occult science like Quabalah, Taoism and everything else. I’m a poet, artist, i use drugs occasionally but that’s because it’s too expensive in winter.

What’s Israel like? The media made everything in Gaza & the heightsnot hit the news because of the peace treaty they signed. Some people have never heard of Yitzsak Rabin much less that he was killed. How do you feel about politics? What’s really going on in Israel?

What’re you into? What books have you read? I read mostly about the occult, revolution, reality, morality, and like subjects. I also am forming a group called the “school of life” and by summer we’ll have connections with everyone in our area (northern Ohio, same size as your country) so you could meet anyone in ohio you want. School of life is a group of deviants from about 10+21 in age and we mostly talk about anything to be discussed, we also will have orgies and hope someday imalgamate into a community in a central location. There’s already a school of life type thing of shooting in other areas but have haven’t yet got in contact with them. We’d love for you to hang, stay, live, or crash in Sandusky for a while. Jeremy  J. should write to you, and you can crash at both our houses, because he lives near me and we hang around, we know each other well.

That’s all I can write. Write back, send a picture to.

In 1996 I traveled in the US and Canada for 4.5 months (the .5 was VERY important, you know…) Prior to leaving I posted an ad in the legendary Slug ‘n’ Lettuce zine. I must have the issue somewhere and if I find it I’ll scan the ad, but anyway, it said something in the lines of “18 y/o anarchist straight edge girl from Israel is looking for places to crash and people to hang out with in North America”. By the time I started planning my trip I already had a basic network but needed to further expend it. A good number of responses landed in the mailbox following the publications. Generous, curious, inviting. I met and stayed with a few people, others I regretfully missed. Some letters were too hideous to reply to but were worth keeping. Like 16 y/o Satan’s, who invited me to orgies in Ohio. Ohio wasn’t even in my very flexible itinerary. Yup, I chose to skip More Than Music festival in Columbus.

I believe I never replied this letter.
